PHC upgradation

Home / Project / PHC upgradation

Dharashiv (Osmanabad), identified as an Aspirational District by NITI Aayog, continues to face significant maternal and child health challenges, especially in rural areas, where Primary Health Centres (PHCs) serve as the first point of institutional childbirth care.

Many PHCs in the region operate with inadequate labour room infrastructure, limited essential equipment, weak infection prevention systems, and insufficient preparedness for safe deliveries and emergency maternal care. Poor ventilation, lack of privacy, inadequate aseptic conditions, and poorly designed labour, delivery, and postnatal spaces compromise both the quality and dignity of care provided to mothers and newborns. These gaps often lead to avoidable maternal and neonatal complications, frequent referrals to higher healthcare facilities, delays in treatment, and increased financial burdens on families.  The project aims to:

  • Upgrade labour rooms to strengthen infrastructure for safe deliveries, postnatal care, and emergency services.
  •  Improve the quality, safety, and dignity of maternal and newborn care, including normal deliveries, immediate newborn care, and postnatal support.
  • Strengthen infection prevention practices, WASH facilities, electrification, power backup, and biomedical waste management systems across PHCs.
  • Equip PHCs with essential obstetric, newborn, and monitoring equipment to improve clinical readiness and referral support services.

Recognising that infrastructure improvements alone are not enough, the project also integrates community-based maternal and child health outreach to raise awareness and improve utilisation of antenatal and postnatal care, anaemia management, nutrition, and early risk identification. By combining infrastructure strengthening, workforce readiness, and community mobilisation, the project aims to improve institutional delivery outcomes, reduce Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), and enhance trust in public healthcare systems among underserved rural communities.
